FROM OUR DIRECTOR & FOUNDER:
The terrifying truth is, hundreds and thousands dogs are killed yearly in shelters. The number of stray dogs that are homeless and wandering in the streets, many sick and injured, is absolutely staggering in numbers. Many die in terrible pain and illness, alone in the streets.
The abused, overbred for profit (by UNREPUTABLE breeders), neglected, and unwanted/rehoming of dogs is OVERWELMINGLY out of control. It is impossible for shelters, pounds and rescues to keep up.
Shelter death rates are devastatingly high, not due to lack of care and compassion from the shelters, but mass overcrowding due to irresponsible owners.
Overcrowding is the direct fault of irresponsible pet ownership as well as not spaying and neutering. Shelter staff see the worst of the worst situations, and have the horrific responsibility of managing an unmanageable, ever growing, unregulated population of animals. We see firsthand the anguish they endure, having no other choice but to euthanize so many.
Shelters humanely euthanize dogs and cats, who would otherwise suffer painful deaths from injury and illness on the streets due to neglectful, irresponsible owners. Countless owners drop off severely sick and elderly pets to the shelter in droves, daily. Other people let their unwanted pets loose or dump them in fields and underpasses, where they are left to fend for themselves...
It's all very hard to comprehend.
A LARGE MAJORITY OF THESE DOGS ARE GENTLE, SWEET NATURED, LOVING DOGS.
THESE ARE THE DOGS WE WORK SO HARD TO SAVE.
The loving, sweet natured animals that end up facing euthanasia at no fault of their own, is why GSRNY exists. And this is why we need help.
GSRNY works closely with our shelter partners to save as many lives as we can, thanks to our devoted GSRNY Team, supporters and adopters. Your support makes our mission to help save more lives possible.
Please consider being a part of our GSRNY Family of loving, giving supporters who want to make a difference.
We need you
GSRNY has connected so many homeless dogs of good temperament, with wonderful, loving families over the years. Our adopters are treated like family from the start of their search, through the adoption process and after adoption.
We have a private, supportive Family Page on social media for adopters and staff, and for those that are not on social media, we are reachable by phone and email, and love updates!
Adoption success for each dog and family, is top priority for us. Finding your best match and new family member is a very exciting journey, and worth the time and wait for the right match for your needs and lifestyle.
We ask that you prepare for the changes and challenges a new dog will bring. The need to set aside time and training daily, is to be expected. Many of our dogs have had a rough, neglected start in life. Adopting is a big decision. It's wonderful but also challenging. It's life changing for the dog and the adopter.
GSRNY dogs are of good temperaments, saved from overcrowded shelter euthanasia lists.
WE DO NOT TAKE IN DOGS WITH ANY TYPE OF SEVERE BEHAVIORAL ISSUES OR AGGRESSION TOWARDS HUMANS OR OTHER ANIMALS
We do not normally take in owner surrenders (special circumstances are sometimes considered), but do work with surrounding shelters.
We are a foster based rescue, which means the dogs we take in, stay right in our homes, with family members and volunteers coming and going and other pets present.
All the dogs we take in need training and more often than not, medical care. Before adoption, our dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered (unless too young or a health condition prevents or delays surgery), and training has started.
Adopters should expect the need of training to continue, with a trainer of their choice, once a new family member is adopted and taken home.
